I stayed at the flamingo in Las Vegas. They are just as bad . They only had 2 ramps that we could find and 2 automatic doors to get in the casino the other door by the flamingo birds was blocked and didn’t work . They were not about service at all . People from the street were coming on the property and they were hi and acting crazy and I didn’t feel safe . I could only get in the door if my friend opened it we were by the purple zebra . This casino is not wheelchair friendly

We just cancelled reservations at Pan Pacific after finding out the toilet grab bar is what is typically found in showers (not doable for us as it is slanted upward)

No complaints re: Crystal (driver). She was very nice  I would like to give her a tip. I AM VERY UPSET. PROBLEM WiTH LYFT APP!!!!!

Request for WAV ride.
App upsell pop up locked up the app with”Your driver will contact you” screen. Charged me for ride and left me standing there for 45m with no ride.
Same lock up on second attempt, trying to upsell cancelled WAV ride with upsell pop up. Driver arrives in SUV could not take WHEELCHAIR !!!! or even transport
Missed doctor appointment.
VERY BAD APP. REPORT ABLE VIOLATION under ADA

WAV rides in APP are unreliable
App crashes trying to upsell and leaves uncertain ride, often cancelling after confusing confirmation.
WAV NOT TO BE TRUSTED

WAV in app is buggy eg cannot preschedule as well as above.
I felt sorry for the nice driver it was not messed up at her level

I am in a power chair 99% of my day and always when I go out on the road/town. I have road the rails to Dallas twice now and will continue to do so. The first time I was concerned about being in my chair but the conductor said that he had the best solution for me to get aboard. He did. He took a movable ramp from the spot in the wall of my car and laid it across the gap between the platform and the train car. Made certain it was settled correctly and said “all aboard” as he grinned. I fell in love with the train and will be getting aboard many more times. With our Trinity Metro every vehicle is ADA compliant for which I am very grateful.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience. I’m really sorry the original guide didn’t give a clear picture of what it’s actually like on the ground. Your feedback was super helpful—I went back through the whole article and updated it to remove anything misleading, add more realistic notes about terrain and conditions, and keep only the places that truly work for wheelchair users.

I really appreciate you taking the time to speak up. It’s feedback like yours that helps make this resource more useful (and honest) for everyone.

To point out just a handful of the egregious errors:

Poipu Beach borders on the inaccessible. There’s no such thing as “beach mats” here– it’s just grass with bumps like a moonscape and pits of sand that bog down your chair. The paths are short little things that end before anywhere you could set up camp. Crossing from the parking areas is hazardous and there are no sidewalks on the beach side. I have fond memories of this place when I didn’t have mobility issues, but I won’t be going back again.

It’s also misleading to say Duke’s Kauai’s secondary entrance is “accessible.” It’s an incredibly steep non-compliant ramp of rough cobble pavers; my fairly powerful chair could barely ascend it and it felt hazardous to descend. My companion would have NO HOPE of pushing me up manually due to the steepness. Nearly all the seating in the dining room is inaccessible, although the thin strip of the nicest tables are reachable. The salad bar is not, it’s at the top of several stairs. I would return to Duke’s but it’s very expensive for an accessibility-hostile place.

Smith’s Luau and Smith’s Tropical Paradise (the same facility) are technically accessible but also exceedingly uncomfortable to access. The paths are dilapidated and tooth-rattlingly rough and most of the interesting features are off-path. The grass is also a rough, crater-covered moonscape that will leave you feeling like your chair is going to break in half from all the bouncing. The dining area is accessible without problems but the amphitheater for the show is not: all so-called ramps are perilously steep, to the point of causing crashes and brake failures. A very strong companion would be necessary to move your chair set in neutral gear.

In general, it’s best to assume that, like on the mainland, “paved trail” is meaningless. Poor maintenance and slapdash non-compliant little “fixes” are everywhere. Kauai is a poor county and has fewer resources to make everything smooth and rollable, so keep that in mind when visiting!

There are definitely options for you and your son, and LA is a great starting point for many cruises. How long of a trip would you say is best for you two?

We’re in SoCal. Any recommendations?

Blue bird is also a very good company that has proven to be pretty reliable for wheelchair cabs.

So according to you which city do you think is best for living independently and is quite accessible to go anywhere around the city on your own in a wheelchair?
Thank you

A short one to keep that bag close! One with a standard width is good. I wouldn’t use those extra thin types.

The Red-Rock-Trolley has an accessible van/bus on the website?! Please tell me more. Did you ask them about this vehicle? Let’s get to the bottom of this so we can help the next person. Thank you for bringing this up.

I just asked about reserving a wheelchair accessible spot on the red-rock-trolley tour and was informed that they do not have any vehicles that are accessible, even though they have a recent model van/bus pictured on their website. I am quite disappointed because I was hoping to take my son on one of the tours.

I thought the domestic Adelaide airport is the worst airport I have been to. The vehicle drop off is quite far from the terminal doors, and if someone is alone, there is no way they can access a loan wheelchair. The area from the car drop off to the main doors is not undercover, it just isn’t convenient, there should be a separate disabled drop off point.

I know this article was written a long time ago so I don’t know if it used to be different, but there are actually specific subway cars without seats and marked for wheelchairs. I live in nyc and have recently started using a mobility aid and so I’ve been doing a lot of research and this is one of the only articles that comes up so I just wanted to let people know. In my experience the last subway car has the smaller sets of seats cleared all the way on the farthest end of of the train for wheelchair users. So you need to know which direction the train is pulling up on the tracks to be able to head to the tail end of it. Now I haven’t had to the time to try this yet but there is a bar on every the platform, it’s hanging from above on the edge of the platform, it’s got black and white stripes and it’s about the same place as the signs saying which line and direction the train is, and it is where the conductor pulls up to (you can Google “subway zebra board” for more info!). So if you’re having trouble figuring out which car is accessible, you should be able to go to the zebra board and when the train pulls up you can ask the conductor. I also know I’ve been on subway cars in the past that have all the seats in the car cleared for wheelchair users but I can’t find any information on it and I can’t even find any information on what I’ve figured out about the last car having wheelchair space so if anyone has anymore information on this I would greatly appreciate it!
